10. Use Sunscreen

Use Sunscreen

A deep, dark tan can be more than just a sign of summer…it can also be a sign of sun damage. Make sure to wear a sunscreen with a high SPF, and reapply it often. Be especially mindful of delicate facial areas, the tip of the nose, the top of the ears, and the back of the hands; these areas often have more sun exposure and show damage before less exposed areas.

9. Repel Bugs

Repel Bugs

Bugs can cause more than itchy bumps, they can also spread disease. Bug repellent, citronella candles and electronic deterrents can help keep bugs at bay. Also make sure that your window screens are free of holes and tears, and avoid allowing water to collect around your home. Stagnant water is a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes.

8. Heat Safety

Heat Safety

In order to stay safe during the dog days of summer, you need to know the signs of heat related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. When possible, stay inside during the hottest time of the day. Make sure to check on the elderly and other individuals who are more susceptible to the heat.

7. Stay Hydrated

One way to handle the heat of summer is to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of cold water and avoid excessive amounts of alcohol and caffeine, which can actually contribute to dehydration. When outside, pack plenty of environmentally friendly water bottles to help ensure you that you have enough clean, cold water to ward off dehydration.

6. Fire Safety

 Fire Safety

With BBQs, bonfires, fireworks, and even draughts, it is easy for fires to get out of control. Make sure to keep a fire extinguisher handy whenever there is an open flame, and before lighting a bonfire or firework, check for any burn bans that might be in effect in your area. It is also wise to check with your local weather to see if there are high winds that could carry a spark or ember and cause a flame to get out of control.

5. Drink Responsibly

Drink Responsibly

Summertime is party time. To stay safe while imbibing, make sure to always have a designated driver, to know your limit, and to be mindful of your surroundings in order to stay safe. Remember, if you drink so much that you don’t actually remember the party, it couldn’t have been much fun.

4. Animal Safety

Animal Safety

Animals need extra attention during the summer to keep them safe. Make sure they have plenty of fresh water and shade to help them tolerate the summer heat and sun. It is also important to provide protection from summertime pests like fleas and ticks that can make your pet uncomfortable—even sick.

3. Car Check-Up

Car Check-Up

A quick check at the mechanics can keep your car running smoothly—and keep you safe—during summer. Make sure to check the coolant, tire pressure, and air conditioning to ensure that your car keeps you cruisin’ this summer.

2. Food Safety

Food Safety

Picnics, family reunions, and BBQs are part of summer. Unfortunately, an uninviting guest sometimes makes an appearance at these events–food poisoning. Be mindful of how long the food has been left out and, if in doubt, go without.
